What Happens to Our Skin During Perimenopause?

Posted by Jennie Fresa on

When our estrogen declines, it can have effects on our skin. We experience collagen and oil loss, making our skin become dry and itchy (not to mention the havoc on our hair and nails which also become dry and more brittle (more on that another day). This decrease in moisture may begin with perimenopause, the years before our periods stop and as we enter menopause.

During this transitional phase (which can start as early as 35), many women may notice changes in their skin's texture and elasticity. Fine lines and wrinkles can become more pronounced, and age spots may appear as a result of hormonal fluctuations. Additionally, the skin may become less resilient and slower to heal, leading to a greater risk of irritation or breakouts.

Does any of this sound familiar?

For the longest time, I thought my skin was just being sensitive but it turns out, it was perimenopause (plus, I had a compromised barrier from testing and using too many active ingredients- a very common issue I see with many clients at my skin studio).

To combat these changes in my skin, I started by refining my skincare routine.  What worked in my twenties and thirties wasn’t working anymore and I knew change needed to happen.

What I learned is that it’s essential to adopt a skincare routine that focuses on hydration and nourishment as top priorities. Using moisturizers that contain hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and essential fatty acids can help restore moisture to the skin.

My first step: take a step back from all the active ingredients and continue with minimal exfoliation (I shelved all of my AHA products and even stopped using Vitamin C and Retinol (temporarily). Trust me!

Next:

1. I started using a gentle cleanser.  A simple, hydrating cleanser without any sulfates (those dry your skin even more)

Product: Six Muses Cold Cream Cleanser

2. HYDRATION became my top priority.  I started using products that contain hyaluronic acid + glycerin.  I basically loaded my skin with moisturizer, mists (and, sealed it all in with an oil at nighttime).

Products: Prebiotic Barrier Repair Essence

Marshmallow Cloud Sensitivity Soothing Cream

Soothe Hyaluronic Moisture Boost Oil

3. I started to make SPF a non-negotiable step.  Like every day, rain or shine, summer or winter.

Product: Dr. Loretta Mineral SPF 40

It’s important to protect the skin from sun exposure, as the thinning skin may be more susceptible to UV damage. Applying a broad-spectrum, mineral sunscreen daily (SPF 30 is sufficient), even on cloudy days, can help prevent further pigmentation issues and maintain overall skin health.

Over the course of the next six months my skin began showing signs of improvement. It was at this point I knew I needed to start formulating products that women, like me, could use during this stage of life and beyond.

The Sixth House has evolved from four plant oils back in 2022 to a small lineup of extremely nourishing, hydrating and highly effective products. I even went on to create a Vitamin C serum and Retinol for sensitive skin. Because- hello, I still want all the benefits…just without the redness, peeling and irritation.

You should always consult with your Esthetician who can provide personalized recommendations tailored to individual skin concerns, ensuring that you navigate the changes in your skin effectively during perimenopause and menopause.  And, don’t forget to do a yearly skin screening with a Dermatologist.

At Jennie Fresa skincare studio, we don’t do one size fits all treatments.  Every facial is customized for our client’s concerns and we provide a tailored “skin script” for all of our guests - because the skincare that works best for your girlfriend, mother, sister or co-worker may not be the best for your skin.  Thank me later.  Reach out with any questions- I’m here to help!
