Skin changes + hormones- my peri menopause journey

Skin changes + hormones- my peri menopause journey

Posted by Jennifer Fresa on

Not long after I turned 45, my glow up decided to leave me. I woke up one morning, and my skin was angry- red, itchy and dry. I think I had a pimple on my chin too. Whatttt?  I felt a little defeated to be honest. After all, I’m a skincare expert, I have an arsenal of products at my fingertips and THIS is my business.

Considering that more than 1 billion women around the world — including me — will experience peri-menopause / menopause by 2026, it’s about time we started chatting about this natural midlife hormonal shift.

As I navigated this new phase, I realized I wasn’t alone in my struggle. Friends and clients at the studio began to share their own experiences with skin changes, hair thinning, and the emotional rollercoaster that often accompanies hormonal shifts. It became clear that while we may have been prepared for the physical signs of aging, the impact of peri menopause on our overall well-being was rarely discussed.

Determined to reclaim my glow, I began to educate myself on the changes my body was going through. I learned that estrogen starts to decline around this time of life. That is the hallmark of peri menopause, and not enough people talk about how it affects our skin!!!

I sought out skincare products (often making my own) that could help rejuvenate my skin, focusing on ingredients like hyaluronic acid and peptides that promised hydration and plumpness. I also incorporated a consistent routine that included a gentle cleanser and sun protection, both crucial in combating the signs of premature aging.

In addition to skincare, I looked into the role of nutrition. I discovered that certain foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and phytoestrogens could support my skin’s health. Incorporating more leafy greens, fatty fish, and nuts into my diet became a priority, along with staying hydrated to help restore my skin’s moisture balance.

But it wasn't just about the external changes; I also recognized the importance of mental and emotional health during this transition. I began practicing mindfulness and meditation, which helped me cope with mood swings and anxiety. Connecting with other women going through similar experiences became a source of support and empowerment, reminding me that we are all in this together. I love my clients because every day is an interesting, new conversation and many of you inspire me, so thank you!

As I embraced this journey, I learned to celebrate the beauty of aging. My skin (and waistline) may have changed a bit, but my wisdom and confidence grew. Instead of fighting against the natural progression of life, I chose to adapt and find new ways to shine. After all, a true glow comes from within, and I was determined to let mine radiate, no matter what stage of life I was in.

This is why I started formulating. To soothe and treat my own changing skin.  It’s really the origin story of my skincare line, Sixth House, and now I’m determined to keep creating even more products to help as many women as possible.

My first product launch was Soothe Hyaluronic moisture boost oil and almost four years later, it’s still a favorite for calming redness and moisturizing dry skin. It’s a go to for me when I feel that dryness sneak in. But, every product in my line was carefully designed for this season of life.

Not sure where to start? Just reply to this email and tell me what your skin challenges are.  I’ll do my best to get you on the right track.

Keep following along (find me most actively on Instagram)….because I’m just getting started on this topic.

Xo, Jennie
