As the winter months approach, the colder temperatures and lower humidity can take a toll on your skin. Fortunately, there are gentle and effective ways to keep your skin healthy and glowing during this chilly season. Here are some of my favorite tips to help you transform and nurture your skin:
Let’s begin with the obvious- hydrate within by drinking plenty of water. The dry winter air can dehydrate your skin, so aim for 84 ounces of water a day. Herbal teas can also be a soothing and hydrating alternative. Yes, herbal tea counts!
Keep skin both hydrated and moisturized-- which are two separate components of healthy skin. Hydration refers to water, while moisture refers to oil. When skin is dehydrated, it struggles to absorb moisture, which is why you might feel dry even after layering all those creams. Try this product-- it's like giving your skin 8 glasses of water from the outside.
Tip: Switch to a Creamy Cleanser, like Six Muses Cold Cream: Instead of using a foaming cleanser that can strip your skin of its natural oils, opt for a creamy or oil-based cleanser. These will cleanse your skin without over-drying it, helping to maintain its moisture balance.
Use a rich, emollient moisturizer after cleansing to lock in hydration. My go-to is Marshmallow Cloud, because it’s hydrating and soothing. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and ceramides that help to hydrate and repair the skin barrier.
Scale back your exfoliation step. While exfoliation is important for removing dead skin cells, be sure to choose a gentle exfoliant during winter. Chemical exfoliants with lactic acid or mild physical exfoliants can help reveal smoother skin without causing irritation. Try Cosmetic Peel for a simple fix.
Incorporate a Humidifier: I always share this tip at my skincare studio. Indoor heating can dry out the air in your home, leading to super dehydrated skin. Using a humidifier, especially at night, can help maintain moisture levels.
Don’t forget about sun protection, even in winter. UV rays can still damage your skin, especially if you’re spending time outdoors in the snow. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 daily.
I’ve said it before—-true beauty is an inside job. Incorporate foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, and antioxidants. Foods like avocados, nuts, fatty fish, and colorful fruits and vegetables can provide your skin with the nutrients it needs to stay radiant.
Consider adding a face oil to your skincare routine. Oils can provide an extra layer of hydration and help to seal in moisture (especially at night). Look for non-comedogenic oils like jojoba, squalane, or rosehip oil. Any of our Sixth House Oils work well. It’s a great last step at nighttime.
Limit Hot Showers: While a hot shower can be inviting in winter, it can also strip your skin of its natural oils. Opt for lukewarm water and limit shower time to keep your skin from drying out. Or, if you take a bath like me, I add a few drops of body oil to my bath for silky smooth skin.
Treat your skin to hydrating masks once or twice a week. Look for masks that contain soothing ingredients like aloe vera, honey, or oatmeal to help restore moisture and calm any irritation. My favorite sheet masks are by Biodance - they make a hydration one but they are ALL great!
By incorporating these gentle strategies into your winter skincare routine, you can help ensure that your skin remains hydrated, healthy, and luminous throughout the season. Remember, consistency is key, so make these practices a regular part of your self-care regimen to see the best results.
