How to Eat for Summer Skin
June 21, 2016

Blueberry Protein Smoothie

Guest blogger Paige Morrissey fills us in on the in’s and out’s of how you can eat for healthy glowing skin this summer!

~Paige Morrissey is a certified holistic nutritionist, wellness expert and health coach. She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Connecticut and is certified through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. Paige is passionate about the science of nutrition and the vital role preventative care plays on overall health. She is currently living in NYC with her husband and golden retriever Teddy~

Our skin, as our body’s largest organ, is often the first indication of what’s happening on the inside.  Ailments such as rashes, blemishes, and rosacea are all indications of internal imbalance. Instead of focusing on expensive, often chemical-laden beauty products to achieve youthful skin, pay attention to your body’s natural ability to heal itself. If you’re looking for radiant skin and bright clear eyes, here are a few of my tips to get a head-start on your summer glow.

1. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! It may sound obvious, however water is vitally important to just about every system in our body – and our skin is no exception.  I start every morning with a tall glass of room temperature water – yes, before coffee! This is one of the easiest and most beneficial things you can do for your body and overall health. Water gets your metabolism revved up, and sends signals to your organs that it’s time to wake up and get going. Drinking enough water keeps your cell membranes plump and smooth and your skin radiant. Aim to drink at least half your body weight in ounces per day.

2. Eat your Carotenoids. Carotenoids are plant pigments that are rich in antioxidants. They can be found in leafy green or bright colored vegetables (think kale, spinach, red peppers). They are health-inducing and collagen boosting (que less wrinkles!) and can act as a shield to quench damaging free radicals that cause sun spots and signs of aging. Carotenoids are also particularly important for eye health and can protect against degenerative diseases that lead to blindness. Be sure to include these in your daily routine. Examples below:

  • Leafy greens (kale, spinach, arugula, broccoli)
  • Eggplant purple asparagus, blackberries, blueberries
  • Beets, red cabbage, red onions
  • Carrots, yellow onions, butternut squash

3. Eat your fat. I’m not talking about bacon (although that’s fine once in a while), high quality fats rich in omega-3 fatty acids, hydrate and nourish dull skin and protect your cell membranes against damaging free radicals. When you cell membranes are strong, toxins are kept out and nutrients are allowed in, and waste products are eliminated from the cell. Some good choice options include: avocados, chia seeds, coconut oil, olive oil, walnuts and fatty fish like wild salmon.

4. Get your greens. Nutrient-dense, leafy greens are loaded with antioxidants and pro-inflammatory properties that help boost skin elasticity and shield against damaging free radicals that cause premature signs of aging. The easiest way to do this is to add a green smoothie into your routine. I’m currently addicted to my morning smoothie loaded with health plant based protein, fats, and fiber. Recipe below.

Berry Green Smoothie

1/4 cup blueberries or mixed berries

1 cup unsweetened almond milk (preference to homemade or califia farms)
1 large handful spinach
1/4 avocado
1 scoop vanilla vegan protein powder
water to taste

5. Steer clear of sugar. This is a topic that is particularly important to me and should be for you too. Sugar has a direct inflammatory effect and wreaks havoc on every system in your body – from blood sugar imbalances and digestive disorders to skin irritation and rashes. I could go on and on about the consequences of a high sugar diet but let’s leave it at this. Try to stay under 30 grams of sugar per day and avoid processed and packaged foods (protein bars and store bought smoothies are often some of the worst offenders).  Keep in mind that anything over 10 grams of sugar is concerned a high-sugar food.

The first area of focus in treating any imbalance should be lifestyle and dietary changes to nourish your bodily systems and promote a hospitable environment for your cells. Once you have that covered, aim to rid your shelves of the chemical and endocrine disrupting lotions and potions.  Start with nature first. I love Jennies store because she features some of the best organic, and sustainable beauty products on the market to complement your clean and green approach to healthy, gorgeous skin.

As the temperatures begin to soar outdoors we are all ready to have our fun in the sun! Every year we learn a little bit more about sun care and sunscreens, so let’s go back to school for a moment and take a short course in sunscreen 101:

First, what is the difference between Chemical sunscreen and Mineral sunscreen?

Chemical sunscreens do not sit on the surface of the skin.  They must be absorbed into the skin to become effective. Therefore they must be applied at least 20 minutes before sun exposure in order to provide adequate protection. These chemicals then absorb the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays to protect us from sun damage. So… if you wait until you arrive at that glorious beach or that happening backyard barbeque before applying your chemical SPF, you run the risk of not being protected. Always apply these types of sunscreens well before going out in the sun.

Now here’s something to keep in mind, those chemicals are being absorbed directly into the bloodstream. They scatter all over the body without being detoxified by the liver and can be detected in the blood, urine, and breast milk for up to two days after a single application. This would be fine if all chemical sunscreens were equally safe, but they are not. Studies have found chemicals such as Oxybenzone to be hormone disruptors mimicking estrogen and interfering with thyroid function, they can cause skin mutations, free radical damage and can also become a skin allergen. Some chemical sunscreens can go so far as to actually trigger hyperpigmentation! The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has detected Oxybenzone in more than 96 percent of the American population.  Luckily there are some chemical sunscreen ingredients that are safer than Oxybenzone. The best ingredients to look for are Avobenzone, and Mexoryl SX and XL. They both rate#2 on the EWG safety scale.

On the other hand mineral sunscreens, also known as physical sunscreens, do not get absorbed into your body. They sit on top of your skin and reflect the sun’s rays and they begin to work the moment you apply. Mineral sunscreens do well to protect against both UVA and UVB rays and provide a more stable protection from harmful UV radiation. Ingredients to look for include Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide. Micronized particles are the newest technology in zinc formulations allowing better consistency and solving the dreaded white cast they were known for in the past.  On a side note, avoid nanotechnology as it is still very controversial and more studies need to be done.

Physical sunscreens are the perfect choice for those of us with very sensitive or reactive skin.  People who suffer from rosacea, have sensitive eyes, are pregnant or breast feeding should use mineral sunscreen since they are unlikely to cause any irritation to the skin and will not build up toxicity in the body.  Mineral sunscreens are my choice for everyday routine sun care and to lessen our toxic load to our bodies. My number one choice of products is by Suntegrity. I religiously use our 5 in 1 Suntegrity moisturizing face cream. It is a tinted moisturizer, sunscreen, primer, and anti-aging product all in one.

Chemical sunscreens have their place too and may be a better choice for those who exercise in the sun and/or are swimming at the beach. They hold up to water and sweat much better than many mineral sunscreens.  Chemical sunscreens can also be formulated in a much thinner consistency which may be easier for some of us to apply liberally and more evenly. It is recommended that we apply one ounce or one shot glass of sunscreen to our entire body every two hours when in direct sun. Chemical sunscreens can be very unstable in sunlight, so a well formulated product with anti-oxidant protection like Coola’s  Sport 50 Unscented Moisturizer for the body is a great choice for summer.  It is water resistant up to 80 minutes, is fortified with phyto-protection from plankton, soothes with arnica, vitamins and organic avocado and linseed oils. We have a wonderful selection of good for you products to choose from!

Some quick sunscreen tips and interesting findings!

  •         Throw away last year’s bottle of sunscreen! It has already expired and will not give you the protection you and your family are looking for.
  •         Avoid Oxybenzone! A hormone disruptor and skin sensitizer. Look for Avobenzone and Mexoryl SX instead.
  •         Avoid vitamin A also known as retinol, retinyl palmitate, retinyl acetate, or retinyl linoleate in your sunscreen. This ingredient may trigger development of cancerous skin lesions or tumors.
  •         Don’t be fooled by high SPF ratings! Higher than 50+ rating gives a false sense of protection and is not proven to provide extra safety against burns and exposure.  Instead reapply often.
  •         Don’t forget your lips! Try Suntegrity lip CPR SPF 30.
  •         Wear a hat and sunglasses for added protection! Harmful radiation can affect your delicate eyes and often tops of ears, tops of feet and scalps go unprotected.
  •         UVA rays are present during all hours of daylight, even on the cloudiest of days. In fact, these rays can penetrate glass windows making it necessary to incorporate SPF into your everyday routine.
  •         New study reveals SPF30 prevents melanoma by 80 percent.
  •         A continuous spray SPF needs 30 – 90 seconds of time, enough to create a glistening sheen to the skin.  Try our selection of Coola sunscreen spray with plant protection and organic ingredients.
  •         Boost your skins ability to ward off damage by eating a diet including lycopene found in many red fruits and vegetables. They contain phytochemicals to improve skin’s ability to recover from UV damage.

Get the Look: Easy, Breezy, Bronzed- Summer Beauty Tutorial
May 17, 2016

Photo 4- After

Summer is on it’s way!  We can’t wait for iced coffee, sun dresses and pretty summer makeup!  Today, I’m sharing one of my all time favorite looks for summer.  It’s easy, breezy and…….. BRONZED!  We all love to look a little sun-kissed this time of year, right?!  A BIG thank you to our beauty contributor, Ell, for sitting in as my model for this tutorial.  The best part about this look– you guessed it!  Everything I used is totally healthy and completely good for you!  Check out our previous post on Natural Self-Tanner by Ell, here.

Step 1: Prime your skin with Coola Daydream Primer to be sure your makeup stays fresh in the hot, humid climate.  And, it minimizes the look of pores. 😉

Step 2:  Fill in brows with Jennie Fresa brow powder in Blonde.  I used an angle brush and set with clear gel.  I love the bold brows and simple makeup.

Step 3:  Apply Ilia Eye Shadow Stick  in AND SHE WAS on your lower lids for a soft (but long-lasting) wash of shimmering champagne color.

Step 4:  Apply 2 coats of Ilia Mascara in Nightfall to really make the whites of your eyes twinkle.

Step 5:  Dab a touch of Ilia concealer where needed.  On Ell, I used C3 just under her eyes and around her nose.

Step 6:  Apply Coola BB Cream all over your face.  One pea size dollop is enough.  I LOVE this BB cream because it’s your moisture, sun protection and even skin tone all in one!

Step 7:  Using your finger, apply just a tad of Kjaer Weis cream blush in HAPPY just on the apples of your cheeks.

Step 8:  Dazzling Cream Bronze is then applied to all the high points of the face– forehead, bridge of nose, high cheek bones and chin.  {I also dabbed a bit on her eye sockets to create a little depth).

Step 9:  To give Ell a beautiful glow, we finished the look with a little luminizing cream by Ilia called Polka Dots and Moonbeams, just on her temples & cupids bow (right above her top lip).

Step 10:  Lastly, we used RMS Lip2Cheek in Promise (not pictured here– I took the photos before I swapped out the color I actually used). with Ilia lipgloss in Butterfly on top.  The gloss is also pretty alone.

How fun!  I’m excited to hear what you think about this look. Have fun and be sure to share your selfies if you try this look at home!  You can shop the entire look here!

I made a New Years Resolution to never use a tanning bed for the rest of my life. In my college years, I did enough fake-and-baking for my entire Freshmen English 101 class — and then some. As I became older and entered my early, mid and now late (AHHH) twenties I started shifting towards a healthy lifestyle.

I have always loved working out and eating well. I know, annoying, right? In college, I attempted to stay on track, but lets be real – it was impossible! I felt physically awful and exhausted almost all of the time, but I did have a ton of fun.. and a lot of pizza! After college, my lifestyle changed little by little and I began working towards the healthy lifestyle I embrace today.

Now, I am a yoga-hiking-running-biking-kale-beet-loving fanatic. Working out and eating well is what I do best. If you ask any of my gal pals, “Who is your healthiest friend?” I think they would roll their eyes and say, “El. She loves kale.”

Yet, even with all of these healthy changes, up until recently, I was still tanning! I would knock out a solid spin class, drink my green juice, practice some yoga, eat my organic free-ranged chicken and then hit the tanning bed? Like, what? One of these things is not like the other. Hmmm. 😕

I was not tanning often and would typically only try and catch a nice bronze in preparation for an upcoming event. Similar to any lady in her 20’s I have roughly 250 weddings, bachelorette parties and bridal showers to look good for. So, not tanning as often and for events only, is acceptable right? NICE TRY El – WRONG! WRONG WRONG!

We are all well aware of the risks associated with tanning. We all also know that our skin is our largest organ. Yet, I feel like a lot of us (myself included) choose to ignore the truth because having a bronze glow makes us feel more beautiful. We need to stop putting our skin on the back burner and start incorporating skincare into healthy living.

I had to think about why giving up tanning was hard for me. Similar to many people, I have always enjoyed being a bit tan because I feel more confident showing my legs and wearing less makeup. I also was often hesitant to use self-tanners because of the harsh and dangerous chemicals. If a pregnant woman cannot use it – why would I want to?

During one of my trips to the JF Brow & Beauty Bar, Jennie introduced me to Suntegrity 5 in 1 Natural Self Tanner. It was love at first…tan — wow so corny! This product is an organic natural self tanner ideal for sensitive skin, non toxic and vegan. IT IS AMAZING. The product description says “healthier and better than a real tan” and I couldn’t agree more. This product is part of the Suntegrity line which was developed after the owner lost her mother to melanoma. The owner is a big advocate for wearing sunscreen and taking care of your skin, but found that most of the products on the market actually contain chemical UV blockers and toxic ingredients. Therefore, she developed her own skincare line which includes the fabulous Suntegrity 5 in 1 Natural Self Tanner. I cannot recommend the product enough and I also cannot recommend the Jennie Fresa Beauty Bar in Madsion enough, either! What I can recommend though is making a trip to the Beauty Bar, getting your eyebrows done by Jennie (I like to call her the eyebrow wizard) and picking up some Suntegrity. :o)

Here’s my Suntegrity How-To:

Step 1

Gently exfoliate your entire body.

Step 2

Have a cup of coffee..or 3. Check out my CT Vibes mug. So cute, right?

CT Vibes

Step 3

Apply 5 in 1 Suntegrity

Evenly apply Suntegrity all over body and wait a few mixtures before dressing. I decided to apply right before bed since you need to avoid showering, sweating and shaving for 8 hours. Make sure to was your hands immediately after. I applied the 5 in 1 Natural Self Tanner right to my face and loved how it came out! If you are too nervous to do this, make sure to try the 5 in 1 Tinted Face Sunscreen.

Step 4

Enjoy your glow!

I woke up the next morning and immediately jumped out of bed to check out my glow. I loved what I saw! I did see a couple of spots that seemed darker and once I showered everything evened out. I am so impressed with how long the tan has lasted! I applied the self tanner Thursday evening took a shower Friday morning, went for a run Friday afternoon, showered again, did a spin class Saturday morning, showered, went out for Bachelorette party Saturday evening in Boston, danced the night away, woke up Sunday (with a minor headache) went for a walk with my girlfriends, showered, went out for brunch and my tan is STILL glowing!

Hello there beauties and brides! With wedding season in full swing here at the boutique, we thought what better than to hear from one of our lovely JF makeup artist’s! Shelly’s back and reminiscing on one of her wonderful weddings from last season! Enjoy xo

Hi All, Shelly here! So for my lovely bride Lauren’s nuptials she and her bridesmaids got ready  in a cozy home in Guilford, Ct on the Saturday morning of October 20, 2012. The morning started off with a slight overcast, but by the time hair and makeup were done, it was the most beautiful sunny autumn afternoon!

Lauren’s look was inspired by a mix of the beautiful Kate Bosworth and Taylor Swift. We went with a soft neutral smokey eye, a rosy tea berry blush and of course some flirty lashes as the cherry on top. As for her lips, the perfect combination of our micro kiss and teaberry colors were used, and finished off by the ever-so-popular JF Super Copper Gloss.

Lauren’s wedding day was the best way I could have finished of my wedding season last year! Since the first time we met at her trial, continuing on with correspondence throughout the summer and then having the pleasure of sharing her special day with her and her wonderful family, Lauren was the absolute perfect bride. I wish her the happiest ever after.

Until next time beauties! XO Shelly

Nourish your body and you will transform your life.  That’s my motto, since I am living proof this is true.

13 years ago, upon graduating from Brown University, I was on track to having a successful career in financial consulting.  Instead, I was finding myself sick, tired, anxious, stressed and depleted.  An excess of 70 pounds crept up and by the time I went to get checked out by a doctor, I was diagnosed officially with an auto-immune thyroid disorder.  Told I’d be on medication for the rest of my life, I also – oh, by the way – had to lose the weight.  One year later, despite my efforts to diet and exercise, I was unable to change the number on the scale.  Still suffering from food comas and persistent ‘brain fog’, deep down, I knew there was something more than just taking a pill…

Keeping my day job, I enrolled in a nutrition program, simply to ‘fix me’. Little did I know that this year of studying a plethora of food theories and philosophies would truly change my future. I learned first-hand that although cliche, we truly “are what we eat”. Something in my diet contributed to my development of my thyroiditis, and I could use food as medicine to help alleviate the symptoms. I also learned that we find ‘nourishment’ from more than just the food on our plates; it is our emotional health that impacts what, how and how much we eat. Anything in our lives that is out of balance, is reflected in our food behaviors and choices. Moreover, it was apparent that we are all unique and a diet that may work for one person, may not for another. Personally, I discovered that I needed to go gluten and dairy free…

Fast forward to now, where I don’t test positive for auto-immunity, I was able to get off the medication and become a mom to my darling kids, Loden (4) and Ellery (7 months!) and wife to Bo.  And yes, I did lose those 70 pounds!  Looking back, I would not change the fact that I was sick; it was truly a blessing to experience the worst of it because I can now relate to my clients who are looking to feel better.

Back to my story, it’s probably not surprising that I ended up quitting my job to pursue my health and nutrition studies.  I founded A Recipe For Wellness LLC to help others discover & achieve their innate healthiness and greatness.  It is a gift to help others enjoy life, celebrate food and food culture, and re-discover themselves through their dietary choices.

Here’s one of my favorite smoothies of late, purifies the blood and gut, and is great for keeping the Spring viruses at bay:

Beauty Talk with……. Kaitlyn Lockman-Owner & Creator of Zen Society
January 16, 2013

Where are you from?
I was born in Pittsfield MA. My family moved to Vestal NY when I was 9.

Playing now on my Ipod:
I am a big music junkie. I love indie and alternative rock. I am currently listening to The Black Keys, Cage the Elephant, Miike Snow, Adele, The Temper Trap, Empire of the Sun, Fun, Alabama Shakes, Gotye, Mumford & Sons

Tell us about your personal style:
My personal style is bohemian chic. I love earthy and neutral tones. I am a fan of scarves, blazers, skinnys and boots.

Why did you start Zen Society?
I believe taking care of your skin is just as important as taking care of the rest of your body. I strive to eat organic food and live a natural lifestyle, but could never find skincare products to go along with this. It was so hard to find products that did not contain any preservatives. I found myself wasting money on lines to later read up how horrible all the ingredients were. I began making products for myself, my mother who was battling cancer at the time, and other friends and family members. It was extremely reassuring knowing where all my ingredients came from. When interest grew locally in some of my products, I knew this was something I wanted to pursue. I enrolled back in school and became a board certified Holistic Health Practitioner specializing in Master Herbology.

What makes your product different than other organic skincare lines?
Because there are so many natural companies, I really wanted to make Zen Society stand out. I believe that my purity and simplicity speaks for itself. I freshly make small batches every week to ensure a customer is never receiving an aged product. I source my ingredients from only USDA certified organic suppliers, locally when possible. My company is certified cruelty free and vegan by PETA and a proud signer of The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and the Natural Pledge. My oils are never heated above 105 degrees so they retain all vitamins and minerals. My products are also gluten and fragrance free which makes them great for even the most sensitive skin. All of my products contain at least 90% USDA Certified Organic content. I donate a percent of every sale to an eco-friendly charity called Friends of the Earth. I do not believe in preservatives, not even naturally derived. I use Jojoba Oil to preserve my products for 6-8 month shelf life. My herbalism and holistic background allow me to create truly natural and organic products that are extremely healthy and effective.

Can you tell us about the process behind making your products?
Zen Society was founded on the principle of simplicity, and I apply this theory to my formulation process as well. I focus on using only a few ingredients to increase concentration and prevent any chance of irritation from too many ingredients. All of my products are made with sensitive skin in mind. My ingredients are of the highest quality and my oils are cold pressed and unrefined. During my herbalism studies I learned which ingredients work best with each skin condition.  I base my line on Ayurveda teachings which reassure my simple techniques and purity. I believe that one should be able to consume what they apply on their skin. Due to the gentleness of my products, they are safe for every skin type and every age. Because I do not use preservatives or cheap fillers, my products are very concentrated and last longer than most mainstream lines.

Any beauty tips for dry, winter skin?
My best tip for winter skin is to exfoliate. During the winter months we have dead skin cells which need to be removed. An exfoliant like my body scrub keeps the skin smooth and healthy. It is also very important to moisturize to prevent chapping and cracking. I recommend a body oil after the shower which will keep the skin hydrated much longer than lotion. Lotion is filled with wax, cheap fillers and emulsifiers which all remain on the skin and do not heal the root problem of dryness.

Do you have a favorite product in your line and why?
I am quite bias with my products because I use them all, and love them equally. If I had to choose some that were my favorite I would say Macadamia Body Oil, Elderberry Toner, Rosewater Mist and Bilberry Repair Serum. All of these are 100% organic and quench my skin with healthy moisture. I apply the Macadamia Body Oil all over my entire body, including my face and it keeps my skin soft and supple. I also use it on itchy, dry spots on my elbows and it relieves discomfort. I apply this oil on the ends of my hair after the shower for hydration as well. I use only one pump of my Bilberry Repair Serum and rub it under my eyes and on my forehead. The base of this serum is Rosehip oil which is wonderful for aging and wrinkles. I also use this as eye makeup remover and neck serum and love that it is so universal. I top my serum with my Rosewater Mist which I also cannot live without. I keep a travel size in my purse and use it throughout the day. Again, rose is so essential to prevent aging and it absorbs oil throughout the day, softens and tones. My Elderberry Toner I use morning and night, sometimes instead of washing my face as it cleanses, tightens and tones.

Do you have any other go-to beauty products besides Zen Society?
Since I have not really ventured into hair care yet, I have found a line that I really enjoy, Neuma. All of their products are quite pure and made from plant botanicals. I have been using them for about a year now and have had great results.  As far as makeup goes I usually only wear mascara and concealer when needed. I use Nvey Eco Mascara and Lavera concealer. I have not found a makeup line that I really love so far as nothing is preservative free.

A BIG thank you to Kaitlyn for visiting with us today!  Stay tuned for a chance to win some of her products on Friday!!

Jennie Fresa Guest Blogger: This Or Something Better…
August 9, 2012

Attachment comes up a lot in life. We attach to people, places, desired outcomes. We attach to expectation.  With the yoga minded ideal of going with the flow- the act of attachment is a mighty wrench chucked into the system.

Everyone seems to be in a pretty amazing goal & manifestation setting mode right now- and I love this. But it is important to detach from the expected & or desired outcomes in order to let it all play out.

In other words, if you are attached to a certain outcome- you let the desire or absence of (wanting) be in the way. And you are effectively blocked.
So when setting goals or manifesting your magical life keep this in mind:
Appreciate what is.
Set your goals, see them. feel them, taste them if necessary.
Drop the words, feel the sensation of having it all- already.
Trust the process that it will all play out (for your greater good)- know and be sure of it.
If you  are noticing an attachment to a very specific outcome than you may be sending out resistance to something that may be better suited for you (you’ve wanted things & been wrong before right?) A good thing to say is “this or something better”. Know what you would like to happen, but be open to something that may better serve you at this time.
And remember- the focus is always, always-on right now & how you can feel good at present. That’s what it’s all about 🙂
