I made a New Years Resolution to never use a tanning bed for the rest of my life. In my college years, I did enough fake-and-baking for my entire Freshmen English 101 class — and then some. As I became older and entered my early, mid and now late (AHHH) twenties I started shifting towards a healthy lifestyle.

I have always loved working out and eating well. I know, annoying, right? In college, I attempted to stay on track, but lets be real – it was impossible! I felt physically awful and exhausted almost all of the time, but I did have a ton of fun.. and a lot of pizza! After college, my lifestyle changed little by little and I began working towards the healthy lifestyle I embrace today.

Now, I am a yoga-hiking-running-biking-kale-beet-loving fanatic. Working out and eating well is what I do best. If you ask any of my gal pals, “Who is your healthiest friend?” I think they would roll their eyes and say, “El. She loves kale.”

Yet, even with all of these healthy changes, up until recently, I was still tanning! I would knock out a solid spin class, drink my green juice, practice some yoga, eat my organic free-ranged chicken and then hit the tanning bed? Like, what? One of these things is not like the other. Hmmm. 😕

I was not tanning often and would typically only try and catch a nice bronze in preparation for an upcoming event. Similar to any lady in her 20’s I have roughly 250 weddings, bachelorette parties and bridal showers to look good for. So, not tanning as often and for events only, is acceptable right? NICE TRY El – WRONG! WRONG WRONG!

We are all well aware of the risks associated with tanning. We all also know that our skin is our largest organ. Yet, I feel like a lot of us (myself included) choose to ignore the truth because having a bronze glow makes us feel more beautiful. We need to stop putting our skin on the back burner and start incorporating skincare into healthy living.

I had to think about why giving up tanning was hard for me. Similar to many people, I have always enjoyed being a bit tan because I feel more confident showing my legs and wearing less makeup. I also was often hesitant to use self-tanners because of the harsh and dangerous chemicals. If a pregnant woman cannot use it – why would I want to?

During one of my trips to the JF Brow & Beauty Bar, Jennie introduced me to Suntegrity 5 in 1 Natural Self Tanner. It was love at first…tan — wow so corny! This product is an organic natural self tanner ideal for sensitive skin, non toxic and vegan. IT IS AMAZING. The product description says “healthier and better than a real tan” and I couldn’t agree more. This product is part of the Suntegrity line which was developed after the owner lost her mother to melanoma. The owner is a big advocate for wearing sunscreen and taking care of your skin, but found that most of the products on the market actually contain chemical UV blockers and toxic ingredients. Therefore, she developed her own skincare line which includes the fabulous Suntegrity 5 in 1 Natural Self Tanner. I cannot recommend the product enough and I also cannot recommend the Jennie Fresa Beauty Bar in Madsion enough, either! What I can recommend though is making a trip to the Beauty Bar, getting your eyebrows done by Jennie (I like to call her the eyebrow wizard) and picking up some Suntegrity. :o)

Here’s my Suntegrity How-To:

Step 1

Gently exfoliate your entire body.

Step 2

Have a cup of coffee..or 3. Check out my CT Vibes mug. So cute, right?

CT Vibes

Step 3

Apply 5 in 1 Suntegrity

Evenly apply Suntegrity all over body and wait a few mixtures before dressing. I decided to apply right before bed since you need to avoid showering, sweating and shaving for 8 hours. Make sure to was your hands immediately after. I applied the 5 in 1 Natural Self Tanner right to my face and loved how it came out! If you are too nervous to do this, make sure to try the 5 in 1 Tinted Face Sunscreen.

Step 4

Enjoy your glow!

I woke up the next morning and immediately jumped out of bed to check out my glow. I loved what I saw! I did see a couple of spots that seemed darker and once I showered everything evened out. I am so impressed with how long the tan has lasted! I applied the self tanner Thursday evening took a shower Friday morning, went for a run Friday afternoon, showered again, did a spin class Saturday morning, showered, went out for Bachelorette party Saturday evening in Boston, danced the night away, woke up Sunday (with a minor headache) went for a walk with my girlfriends, showered, went out for brunch and my tan is STILL glowing!

Oscars 2014 Beauty
March 3, 2014

And the winner for best hair and makeup goes to…….

Watching the oscars is a night I look forward to all winter long.  It keeps me going through all the bone chilling days and night.  This year was extra special because I was accompanied by my bestie, Racheal.  We drank wine and dished all night long about fashion and beauty- and the best part, my amazing husband served us “best-picture” themed tapas (see my Instagram for a peek at the menu!) while we watched the show.

Here are my top 5 picks for the best hair and makeup on last nights red carpet:

1.) Kate Hudson
Kate was drop dead gorgeous with her smokey eye.  I loved the edgy look with her dress.  She nailed it with a pale lip and luminous skin.  Her side swept, wavy hair was just imperfect enough.  I’m really loving the idea of unstructured, more effortless hair styles these days.
Oscars 2014 1

2.) Sandra Bullock
Another smokey eye perfectly done!  A definite trend on the red carpet last night- more and more celebrities opted for the nude lip.  Sandra’s look was perfection.  And, I want her hair color!  Her glossy chocolate locks with warm caramel highlights shined on the red carpet.

3.) Charlize Theron
She always gets it right.  How stunning is Charlize?!!! Wow!  This woman looks good no matter if she’s wearing retro waves (2013), a pixie (last year) or the chic short do.  This was classic makeup perfection with black liquid liner flicked out on the corners and sheer shimmery lids.  Head to toe beauty!

4.) Cate Blanchett
Her look reminded me of peaches and cream.  Her flawless skin glows! The whole look was “classic Cate” and although I was expecting her to change it up a bit for the Oscars, she knows what works for her and went with it!  Congrats on the win!

5.) Naomi Watts
She is always willing to take a risk.  Last night her winter white, Calvin Klein dress was a bridal worthy choice.  Statement necklaces were floating about the red carpet last night. She too, wore her hair down and swept to the side.  I predict we’ll see a lot of brides walk down the isle with this look.  Her poppy lip stood out in a sea of nude lips.

Who were your favorites?!

The White Dress in Color – Inspirations for the Modern Bride
November 6, 2013

I had the opportunity a few years back to collaborate with an amazing team of wedding industry professionals for the production of the newly launched coffee table book:  The White Dress in Color-wedding inspirations for the modern bride.  With my makeup kit in tow, I headed for the Big Easy to create magic that would soon be published by my friends and colleagues, Beth Chapman, Carla Ten Eyck, and Candice Coppola.  It was an experience of a lifetime. The makeup was a combination of soft, romantic peach tones and pops of pink and turquoise to compliment the french-inspired feel for the shoot.  I had so much fun creating these makeup looks.  This is one book brides will want to have on their coffee table–a chock full of beautiful inspirations to swoon over.  Head over to {amazon} and pre-order your copy now!

The Met Gala 2013 Fashion & Beauty Faves
May 10, 2013

So the Met Gala was this past Monday and we’ve finally narrowed down our favorite looks of the night! With punk as the theme we were so thrilled to see how the stars would interpret this motif with not only their fashion choices, but their beauty looks as well! From edgy, trendy to just flat out fabulous, these stars did not disappoint delivering nothing but ultimate punk perfection!

Jennifer Lopez

Now that’s how you do a faux-hawk! We all know that J.Lo is a glamour girl all-day, everyday, but that didn’t stop her from delivering some serious showstopping edge Monday night!  While Miss Lopez stayed true to form in an ultra glamorous animal print Michael Kors gown, she brought the edge with that killer updo’! And who said punk couldn’t be glam? Completely faux-hawk Fabulous!

Emily Blunt

Forget statement lips, Emily looked positively punk and totally on trend with her bright neon pink winged liner. With a classic black Carolina Herrera gown and a knotted up-do’, Emily Blunt definitely turned up edginess and showed us all how pink eyeliner is done! Even Anna Wintour herself was quoted saying “the color of punk is pink,” and what Wintour says goes! With some to die for Lorraine Schwartz dagger earrings to complete the look, Emily looked darring and dangerous!

Kristen Stewart

While I typically don’t like K.Stew’s red carpet looks, her deep maroon ensemble had me thinking twice! This Stella McCartney jumpsuit was stunning, different and still very feminine. I also really loved  the smoked out eye that used the same deep red color scheme as her jumpsuit! I thought it was just the right amount of edge that wasn’t too matchy-matchy. From her outfit, makeup and slicked back hair (plus those fab heels), K.Stew’s look was the pleasantly unexpected!

Lily Collins

Lily Collins had the punk theme down pat as she donned a gorgeous Moschino gown complete with leather and lace (and not to mention some studs)! But the real winner of this look was her hair and makeup! Look at those eyes, amazing! Miss Collins was definitely not afraid to push the edginess as she left her lids bare, and softly defined the shape of her eyes with shadow. From the dramatic outlined wing to the blue streaks through her hair, I was completely obsessed with every detail of Lily’s look!

Cara Delevingne

Plunging neckline, some serious studs, a side braid, tousled hair, and finally the classic smokey eye? All we can say is Cara’s Met Gala look was flawlessly punk! From her beautiful Burberry gown, to those intense eyes, this look is the epitome of edgy, punk and even translatable for everyday wear. This look is perfect for a night out or even a walk down the aisle. So attention edgy brides, don’t be afraid of a little drama because this look is completely doable! From the on trend side swept hair, braided texture and always classic smoked out eye, this look is perfect for those looking for a little something extra (and thats why we love it)!

Emmy Rossum

Emmy Rossum was hands down my favorite of the night! From head to toe, this beauty was totally punky, funky chic! While Emmy stunned in an elegant silver Donna Karan Atelier gown, her edgy braided updo gave a beautifully textured balance to the look! But what really completed Emmy’s edgy ensemble were her dramatic winged out eyes. The strong and defined wing with a rusty colored undertone was breathtaking, dramatic and still soft!

Beauty Icon: Grace Kelly
April 19, 2013

A State of Grace

Beauty Icon: Grace Kelly

While there have been countless Royal Weddings, from the scandalous to the modern day fairy tales, there has never been one quite as timeless as American princess, Grace Kelly’s! On April 19th, 1956 hollywood darling Grace Kelly wed Prince Rainier III of Monaco at St. Nicholas Cathedral in the French Riviera city of Monte Carlo. As today marks what would be the Royal couple’s 57th wedding anniversary, we couldn’t resist reminiscing on not only these infamous nuptials, but the bride and beauty icon herself, Grace Kelly. Almost as if it were taken right out one of her many glamorous films, this Philadelphia born beauty, captivated the world as she went from hollywood golden girl to a real life princess all while holding a style and ‘grace’ all her own. Kelly attained a classic signature style that especially did not falter when it came time to walk down the aisle. Looking like nothing short of royal and radiant, Grace wore an elegant silk taffeta tulle gown with a lace fitted bodice and adorned in seed pearls. This exquisite gown was created and gifted by the MGM studios and costume designer, Helen Rose (talk about a wedding gift!) Her regal ensemble was completed with a juliet cap headpiece veil, a small ornate bible and her lily of the valley bouquet, leaving her looking soft, elegant and the epitome of hollywood royalty. From her embodiment of old hollywood glamour, her regalness whilst walking down the aisle and becoming a princess to her cool sophistication while concealing a baby bump with her now infamous Hermes bag, Kelly was truly was the epitome of grace and her legacy lives on to this day.
